GIG HARBOR PUGET SOUND ANGLERS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE June 2022

Our next scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday, June 8 at Tower Lanes located at 6323 6th Ave., Tacoma, telephone 253-564-8853. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM but feel free to come early and swap fish stories or grab something to eat from the grill. Our June speaker will be Capt. John Keizer discussing ocean salmon fishing gear and tactics. If you have a speaker suggestion or wish to volunteer, please let me know.

Our May membership drawing sponsored by John Hager of Southworth Marine in Port Orchard was for $160. Fred Barnes’ name was drawn but he was not present. Next month’s drawing will be for $260. Thanks again to Southworth Marine.

Our speaker for May was WDFW LE Officer Jeff Summit who is assigned to our area. Officer Summit provided information on regs as well as current activities in the area and some personal stories. Good stuff and he was very interactive with the group. We are very glad to have him working for us and the resource.

Club members were active putting together the salmon rearing pen and moving it into place at Pt. Defiance Marina. The Puyallup Tribe delivered 50K fish and WDFW is scheduled to provide an additional 50K before this report is published. If you want to sign up for feeding see our webpage.

The swap meet was at Pt. Defiance was a success and we plan on participating next year.. If you have anything to donate for next year please bring it to a meeting or let us know.

Contacts with Metro Parks Tacoma event planning staff has confirmed no conflicts over the dates for derbies to be held the first and second Saturdays of August. However, look for potential parking problems on 16 July when an event is scheduled at Dune Park. As of this date we do not know if it will be an afternoon or evening event.

GIG HARBOR PUGET SOUND ANGLERS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE May 2022

Our next scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday, May 11 at Tower Lanes located at 6323 6th Ave., Tacoma, telephone 253-564-8853. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM but feel free to come early and swap fish stories or grab something to eat from the grill. Our May speaker has yet to be confirmed but we hope to have WDFW Law Enforcement folks. If you have a speaker suggestion or wish to volunteer please let me know

Our April membership drawing sponsored by John Hager of Southworth Marine in Port Orchard finally had a winner! Roger Goff’s name was drawn and he was present to win the $1,040! Thanks again to Southworth Marine.

What can I say about Tommy Donlin who was our April guest speaker? If you were not there or have not previously attended one of his seminars you have really missed out. Tommy provided a lot of great information on tuna tactics and tackle in a way that kept everyone both focused as well as entertained. He has offered to come back and speak on other fisheries and I look forward to another visit. Thanks again Tommy.

Shrimping dates have been released and the openers have been pushed back a couple of weeks on the calendar. Season info for all areas can be found at: https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfishing-regulations/shrimp.

Our Dave Johnson has again been heavily involved in the development of salmon seasons and was able to provide specifics for 2022 as well as how that evolved. There are always lots of interested groups vying for a share in what is a very technical process. Glad we have Dave there working for us recreational folks.

The collaborative salmon rearing net pen project is moving forward with 100K Chinook expected to be delivered on or about 1 May (50K from the Puyallup tribe and 50K from WDFW). There will be several work parties so if you are interested so keep an eye on our FB page.

We will have a table at the Point Defiance swap meet on 7 May. If you have anything to donate for us to put on the table please let us know and please come by to see what you might want/need.

Finally, we are getting started on our 2022 Derby which is scheduled for Saturday, 13 August. We have been engaged in conversations with Metro Parks Tacoma to minimize any potential conflicts with their planning for summer events at nearby Dune Park.

April 2022 Presidents Message

GIG HARBOR PUGET SOUND ANGLERS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE   April 2022

NOTE:  THE GOVERNOR’S INDOOR MASK MANDATE HAS BEEN LIFTED AND OUR CURRENT VENUE OF TOWER LANES IS NOW LONGER REQUIRING MASKS NOR WILL PSAGH.  IF YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WEARING A MASK WHILE ATTENDING OUR UPCOMING MEETINGS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DO SO.

Our next scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday, April 13 at Tower Lanes located at 6323 6th Ave., Tacoma, telephone 253-564-8853. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM but feel free to come early and swap fish stories or grab something to eat from the grill.  Our April speaker will be Capt. Tommy Donlin whose presentation will be TUNA TUNA TUNA!  Tommy is a regular presenter at events such as the Seattle Boat Show.  I have had the pleasure of sitting through his presentation a couple of times and look forward to another refresher and more opportunity for Q&A.   With Covid limiting some potential speakers if you have a suggestion or wish to volunteer please let me know.  Keep checking out our Facebook page for speaker updates.

Our March meeting was a full house with several new members and a couple of old members renewing so as to be eligible for the membership drawing sponsored by John Hager’s Southworth Marine of Port Orchard.  The drawing had grown to $930.  Tom Owens’ name was drawn but he was not present so the drawing purse will grow to $1,040 for April.

When I invited WDFW Region 6 Director Larry Phillips to be our March speaker little did I know that he was considering leaving WDFW.  As a result his presentation was a combination of how our fisheries are managed to include the various layers of bureaucracy as well as some personal glimpses into his career with WDFW (1996-2022) and particularly his time as Region 6 Director (2016-2022.  One thing Larry stressed was the need for the sport fishing groups to work together on issues rather than being fragmented.  Sage advice from a guy who has seen it play out.

FYI the USCG has a couple of recent regulatory rules of interest.  Without going into detail there is one for boats less than 26 feet to have an engine kill switch attached to operator when on plane.  That does not apply for boats with helm in an enclosed area.  The other is that fire extinguishers will be considered expired after 12 years from the date of manufacture.   Check them out for the details.

The collaborative salmon rearing net pen project is moving forward with 100K Chinook expected to be delivered mid-April (50K from the Puyallup tribe and 50K from WDFW).  Special thanks to the Puyallup tribe for ensuring that the Corps of Engineers will be issuing a permit in time for this year.  There will be several work parties so if you are interested keep an eye on our FB page.

Finally, we are getting started on our 2022 Derby which is scheduled for Saturday, 13 August.  We have been engaged in conversations with Metro Parks Tacoma to minimize any potential conflicts with their planning for summer events at nearby Dune Park.
