GHPSA September Outing

The Gig Harbor Puget Sound Angler’s fishing outing is Saturday 21 September at Grays Harbor (Westport) for inshore trophy chinook. After this weekend fishery goes to coho only.

 Outing Information

Known affectionately to anglers who fish the place as Johns River, its located east of Westport Marine Area 2.2 East, just off the mouth of the Johns River in Grays Harbor.
Why does this tidal area produce such big fish? The Humptulips, Satsop, and Wynoochee rivers all empty into Grays Harbor and they’re all known big fish rivers. Grays Harbor is the transition zone from salt to fresh water for these salmon heading to these rivers.

This is a tide water fishery, meaning leave your downriggers at home, you’re fishing in water that runs 10-30 ft. deep. Most of the fish caught here are in 15 ft of water or less,
many times 8-10 feet.

Large cutplug herring is the ticket here. The normal fishing setup is a 3 to 6-oz. ball sinker on a 6-12 inch dropper to a 2-4 foot mono leader with 5/0-6/0 octopus hooks. The leader and dropper are mated together to a ball bearing swivel to make the connection.

Sometimes a little more attraction then the big herring is needed so use a Yakima Bait Fish Flash. These pyramid shaped flashers give a great flash in the water and have zero drag in the water

August President’s Message

Our Annual Gig Harbor Salmon Derby was another huge success!  This was our 18th year of hosting this event.  The derby is held on the 2nd Saturday of August each year.  Our derby is also part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series, which is now comprised of 15 salmon derbies from around the region.  This year we had more than 350 anglers participate with 69 fish weighed.

First place and bragging rights went to Sharon Pendergast with a salmon weighing in at 19.07 lbs.  Sharon also took top prize in the Ladies Division.  Her fish was caught at Pt. Defiance.  Second place went to Herb Wottlin, with a fish weighing in at 18.37 lbs.  His fish was caught near Chambers Creek in area 13.  Third and fourth places went to Bart Mahugh and Jaeger Maxfield with fish weighing in at a respectable 17.65 and 17.11 lbs.  The top 4 places received cash awards and places 4th through 20threceived their pick donated merchandise from our many sponsors.   Jaeger Maxfield also took 1st place in the Youth Boys Division and Molly Ng took first place in the Youth Girls Division with her fish weighing in at 14.03 lbs.  For the Team Event, which is comprised of 1 adult and 1 youth 17 and under, Jaeger Maxfield and his dad Ken Maxfield won with a combined weight of 33.99 lbs.  For complete results, checkout our 2013 Derby Results Page at https://gigharborpsa.org/derby/results.

The BBQ and Awards Ceremony was well attended and everyone who did attend walked away with a raffle prize this year.  A special thanks to our premier sponsors, Titus-Will Ford – Scion – Toyota (Tacoma), Columbia Bank, Southworth Marine, and Cabelas for their continued support.  Also, a big thank you to the rest of our event sponsors, volunteers and participants.  Hope to see you next year!

I want to personally thank Jeff Zuniga for all of his hard work on this year’s derby.  Hopefully he can stay aboard as derby sponsor coordinator and next year’s V.P. can handle the rest of the coordination for the event.  Again, thanks Jeff, and a big thank you to all those who volunteered, participated, and the rest of the event sponsors.  Hope to see you next year!

September 10th’s speaker will be Brian Lull, sales manager for the Northwest Sportsman magazine.  Topic will be freshwater fishing.

Also in September, Saturday the 7th will be out annual picnic at Titlow beach.  Hours are from 10:00 AM, to 5:00 PM.  Lots of food and fun for the entire family.  Remember to bring your best pot of clam chowder and walk away with bragging rights and a cash award.

With so many fishing opportunities this time of year, its hard to talk about just one.  If you are new to the club or new to fishing, contact a member, come to a meeting, or go online for help.  That’s what we are all about, helping each other to become more successful and better stewards of our resources.

Welcome aboard new members:  Dick Patricelli, Rob Johnson, Bruce Macdonald, and Nick Bouchee.

John Schauble was present for last month’s meeting and won the membership drawing.  Thanks to John Hager of Southworth Marine for making his generous donations each month.

See you on the water and at the next meeting!
