August President’s Message
Our Annual Gig Harbor Salmon Derby was another huge success! This was our 18th year of hosting this event. The derby is held on the 2nd Saturday of August each year. Our derby is also part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series, which is now comprised of 15 salmon derbies from around the region. This year we had more than 350 anglers participate with 69 fish weighed.
First place and bragging rights went to Sharon Pendergast with a salmon weighing in at 19.07 lbs. Sharon also took top prize in the Ladies Division. Her fish was caught at Pt. Defiance. Second place went to Herb Wottlin, with a fish weighing in at 18.37 lbs. His fish was caught near Chambers Creek in area 13. Third and fourth places went to Bart Mahugh and Jaeger Maxfield with fish weighing in at a respectable 17.65 and 17.11 lbs. The top 4 places received cash awards and places 4th through 20threceived their pick donated merchandise from our many sponsors. Jaeger Maxfield also took 1st place in the Youth Boys Division and Molly Ng took first place in the Youth Girls Division with her fish weighing in at 14.03 lbs. For the Team Event, which is comprised of 1 adult and 1 youth 17 and under, Jaeger Maxfield and his dad Ken Maxfield won with a combined weight of 33.99 lbs. For complete results, checkout our 2013 Derby Results Page at https://gigharborpsa.org/derby/results.
The BBQ and Awards Ceremony was well attended and everyone who did attend walked away with a raffle prize this year. A special thanks to our premier sponsors, Titus-Will Ford – Scion – Toyota (Tacoma), Columbia Bank, Southworth Marine, and Cabelas for their continued support. Also, a big thank you to the rest of our event sponsors, volunteers and participants. Hope to see you next year!
I want to personally thank Jeff Zuniga for all of his hard work on this year’s derby. Hopefully he can stay aboard as derby sponsor coordinator and next year’s V.P. can handle the rest of the coordination for the event. Again, thanks Jeff, and a big thank you to all those who volunteered, participated, and the rest of the event sponsors. Hope to see you next year!
September 10th’s speaker will be Brian Lull, sales manager for the Northwest Sportsman magazine. Topic will be freshwater fishing.
Also in September, Saturday the 7th will be out annual picnic at Titlow beach. Hours are from 10:00 AM, to 5:00 PM. Lots of food and fun for the entire family. Remember to bring your best pot of clam chowder and walk away with bragging rights and a cash award.
With so many fishing opportunities this time of year, its hard to talk about just one. If you are new to the club or new to fishing, contact a member, come to a meeting, or go online for help. That’s what we are all about, helping each other to become more successful and better stewards of our resources.
Welcome aboard new members: Dick Patricelli, Rob Johnson, Bruce Macdonald, and Nick Bouchee.
John Schauble was present for last month’s meeting and won the membership drawing. Thanks to John Hager of Southworth Marine for making his generous donations each month.
See you on the water and at the next meeting!

WDFW seeking Washington State Outdoor Recreation Youth Council
Seeking engaged youth, age 14 to 18, to explore formation of Youth Council with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is exploring the formation of a Washington State Outdoor Recreation Youth Council. We are looking for interested young people, ages 14 to 18, to help us with that exploration. A Youth Council could potentially help WDFW develop programs that apply outdoor activities, research and conservation to school and community projects.
To begin this process, we will select six youth from across the state to participate in a workshop with WDFW staff and members of the state Fish and Wildlife Commission, where they will provide advice to the department on the composition of a Youth Council and discuss the best ways to engage young people and to stimulate their interest in outdoor recreation.
WDFW will cover the costs of travel, meals and hotel for the young people selected to participate in this initial workshop and their parents. The workshop is expected to take place in Olympia, WA in late August or September.
Interested 14 to 18 years olds can apply by submitting an email or letter by July 26, describing their background and interest in participating to Jason Wettstein at jason.wettstein@dfw.wa.gov or by letter to Jason Wettstein, Public Affairs, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, P.O. Box 43200, Olympia, WA 98504.
The email or letter should contain:
- Name
- Mailing address
- Email address
- Phone number
- Statement of interest (one page or less)
- Dates when available in late August and in September
- Name and contact information of parent(s) or guardian
Thank you,
Jason Wettstein

July’s Presidents Message
Our July Speaker was Tom Pollack who gave a very interesting presentation on mooching. Tom shared his simple, but very effective herring brine, along with all aspects of successful mooching. Thank you, Tom, for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us for an evening!
Michael Brazeau was at the fish talk table letting us all know what’s working at Westport. Several members have set up “fish camp” at Westport for the summer. It’s all part of the very vital fish network we rely on to catch summer kings.
Don’t forget August meeting will be the first Tuesday, August 6th, because John will be doing his preparation for our Annual Salmon Derby to be held on Saturday August 10th. Don’t miss this one. We will also be giving away another Scotty 1106 electric downrigger, and another St. Croix 10’6” downrigger rod, along with several tackle packs geared to catch Puget Sound salmon.
Jeff Zuniga has been working hard for this year’s derby and has secured lots of sponsors and great prizes. Come to the August meeting, purchase your derby tickets, and support your club. Those who won’t be fishing should still purchase tickets and attend the awards ceremony for a chance to win some great raffle prizes. Also, Jeff is looking for more volunteers to help out.
Our annual picnic this year is September 7th at Titlow beach. Always lots of fun for members and their families. I look forward to the clam chowder cook off.
Our member’s only drawing was unclaimed, so the pot gets bigger. Thanks to John Hager of Southworth Marine for sponsoring our drawing each month.
The board will meet at 6:00 P.M. at T.O.A on August 6th. All weigh-in volunteers will get together at 6:30 P.M. for training and the general meeting will follow at 7:00 P.M.
Come early, have a hot dog, and support your club!
