November President’s Message

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FROM JEFF ZUNIGA ON BEHALF OF VENICE ROOF

Our general meeting was held on November 12th at 7:00 PM.  Attendance was good considering that many of our members were attending the annual club outing in Mexico.  I haven’t heard many catch reports, but from the few members that had returned, it sounded like it was another great time south-of-the-border.  We held our monthly membership drawing and unfortunately the member selected was not in attendance.  Sorry Chuck!  For our next drawing, the amount will be up to $260.  Thanks to John Hager at Southworth Marine for continuing to sponsor our monthly membership drawing.  The board voted to defer our annual officer elections for 2014 until January’s Meeting.  In the future, our annual elections will be held in October.   This will allow newly elected officers to attend a couple of board meetings prior to officially taking office in January and also avoid holding elections during the same time as our annual club outing in Mexico.  Therefore, final nominations and voting will take place at our January 14th meeting for 2014 officers and then again next October for 2015 officers.  John Hager, from Southworth Marine, gave a very timely and informative talk on winterizing your boat and the effects of ethanol in our fuel.   This was a very interactive session and was much appreciated.  I heard lots of great feedback regarding this talk. Thanks John for sharing your expertise in this area.

Our December meeting will be on the 10th at 6:00 PM.  This is our annual Christmas Party and potluck and will be held an hour earlier than normal.  There will be no guest speaker for this event, but rumor has it we will have a special guest from the North Pole.  This is a family event and we are requesting that you please RSVP.  If you have kids, we need their gender and age so we can get an appropriate gift.  Instructions for what to bring will be posted on our website and we will also send out postcards with similar information.   Saturday, December 7th is our member’s only Blackmouth Derby in Honor of Dick Smythe.   Don’t forget that participation in our monthly events earns you points towards our “Fisherman of the Year” award.

For those of you who are current members, it is time to renew your annual memberships for 2014.  In addition to renewing in-person or via USPS, you can also renew your membership online at our website (https://gigharborpsa.org).  As we near the end of year, it is also time to submit your entry for our annual “Largest Fish” awards.  You can submit your entry at our December meeting or send it via mail.  It must be postmarked by December 31st to qualify.  Submission forms are on our website or will be available at our December meeting.

We meet the second Tuesday of every month at the Tacoma Outboard Association (646 N. Wilton Road, Tacoma, WA).   Our January speakers will be Ron Garner (PSA President) and Carl Burke (PSA Lobbyist) and both are board members of Fish NW.  This should be a very informative discussion.  Guests are always welcome and we hope to see all of our members in attendance!  This meeting will return to its normal start time of 7:00 PM, but come early and grab a hot dog.

Wear your lifejacket, be safe on the water and good luck fishing!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FROM JEFF ZUNIGA ON BEHALF OF VENICE ROOF

Our general meeting was held on October 8th at 7:00 PM.  The actual meeting was preceded by one of our semi-annual garage sales, which began at 5:00 PM.  There were lots of good deals to be had.  You know what they say, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.  I know I walked away with some great deals on a couple of rods and lures… after all, you can never have too many rods or fishing lures.  The general meeting was well attended.  I’d like to welcome new member Andrew Brengman to our club.  Our membership continues to grow.  The membership drawing was up to $260 and was won by George Mcleod.  A big thanks to John Hager at Southworth Marine for continuing to sponsor our monthly membership drawing.  Because we had a winner, next month it will start back at $150.  Each year we hold elections for President, Vice President, Secretary and the Treasurer positions.  During our meeting we began nominations for our 2014 officers.   Final nominations and voting will take place at our November 12th meeting.   Todd Girtz was our featured guest speaker.  He gave a phenomenal presentation on fall river fishing for Kings and Silvers.  The one thing about Todd, he likes to catch fish… a lot of fish!  I can hardly wait to get on the water after his talk.  You really missed out if you weren’t in attendance.

Wow, can you believe it? Only 2 meetings remain before the end of the year.   Our next meeting will be on November 12th.  Come check us out, guests are always welcome.  We have a great club that loves to fish and talk fishing.  You will learn a lot and have a lot of fun in the process.  For those of you who are current members, it is time to start renewing your annual memberships for 2014.  In addition to renewing in-person or via USPS, you can also renew your membership online at our website (https://gigharborpsa.org).  Our November speaker will be John Hager from Southworth Marine.  John’s presentation will be on winterizing your boat, fuel additives and maintenance tips.  You don’t want to miss out on this one, especially if you own or maintain a boat.  Our December meeting will be on the 10th.  This is our annual Christmas Party and potluck.  There will be no guest speaker for this event, but rumor has it we have a special guest from the North Pole.  This is a family event, so bring your spouse and children.

In addition to our monthly meetings, we have a monthly outing/activity.  John Keizer, our activity coordinator, has done a fantastic job organizing our activities for the past couple of years.  Thanks John!   We have 2 club outings for the rest of the year:   November 7th – 11th East Cape Mexico Marlin Tournament and December 7th, our member’s only Blackmouth Derby in Honor of Dick Smythe.   Don’t forget that participation in our monthly events earns you points towards our “Fisherman of the Year” award.

We meet the second Tuesday of every month at the Tacoma Outboard Association (646 N. Wilton Road, Tacoma, WA).   Our meetings begin at 7:00 PM, but come early and grab a hot dog and chips.

Wear your lifejacket and be safe on the water.  Good luck fishing!

GHPSA September Outing

The Gig Harbor Puget Sound Angler’s fishing outing is Saturday 21 September at Grays Harbor (Westport) for inshore trophy chinook. After this weekend fishery goes to coho only.

 Outing Information

Known affectionately to anglers who fish the place as Johns River, its located east of Westport Marine Area 2.2 East, just off the mouth of the Johns River in Grays Harbor.
Why does this tidal area produce such big fish? The Humptulips, Satsop, and Wynoochee rivers all empty into Grays Harbor and they’re all known big fish rivers. Grays Harbor is the transition zone from salt to fresh water for these salmon heading to these rivers.

This is a tide water fishery, meaning leave your downriggers at home, you’re fishing in water that runs 10-30 ft. deep. Most of the fish caught here are in 15 ft of water or less,
many times 8-10 feet.

Large cutplug herring is the ticket here. The normal fishing setup is a 3 to 6-oz. ball sinker on a 6-12 inch dropper to a 2-4 foot mono leader with 5/0-6/0 octopus hooks. The leader and dropper are mated together to a ball bearing swivel to make the connection.

Sometimes a little more attraction then the big herring is needed so use a Yakima Bait Fish Flash. These pyramid shaped flashers give a great flash in the water and have zero drag in the water
