President’s Message for May 2017

GHPSA Presidents Message May 2017

We all enjoyed a great April meeting and were glued to our State PSA President Ron Gardner’s seminar on halibut fishing. This month’s speaker will be Andy Anderson with King Trailers and will give us the secrets of keeping our trailers running great to all the salmon hot spots this summer.

We have two event days at Bass Pro on May 20 & 27 supporting the kid’s trout pound. We need 4 members each day to work catch and release pond helping the kids C&R trout. This is fun time watching kids land trout and helps instill fishing in their future not just video games. Signup sheet will be at the meeting.

As I mentioned at the last meeting we have revamped our big fish awards. You can now entry one entry for chinook salmon, coho salmon, trout, steelhead and halibut.  So each member will have up to 5 entry’s total over the season 1 for each fish category. Weight doesn’t count expect for bragging rights! For each entry you will be entered into a drawing for the grand price for $500. So if you catch all 5 species you get 5 chances to win. To enter fill out the form on our web site and attach a picture of your fish for each category of fish caught. Bring it to the meeting to enter. Note: All steelhead only required an in water picture. All entries will be due by 1 Nov 2017.

The winner of the Southworth Marine monthly membership drawing was our own treasurer, Jeff Zuniga, who took home $260.00. This month membership drawing will be worth $150.00.

Now that we have the salmon season set for this year and everyone’s making their fishing plans keep August 12th on your schedule for our annual summer salmon derby and 9 December for our club winter blackmouth derby.

When you see club members Dave Johnson and Art Tachell shake their hands and tell them thanks for all the time and effort they spent representing us at the NOF salmon season process this year. Trust me when I say they earned it!

I been asked a few times why we not having more club fishing outings this year? The answer is very simple, low turnout by club members. I cut the outings back to just a few a year and have no plans to add anymore at this time. However if you’re interested in putting one on feel free to take the reins and host one. If you have a great idea stop by the GHPSA board meeting on 2 May at Ben Dew’s Clubhouse Grill, 6501 6th Ave in Tacoma. It starts at 6PM and doesn’t last longer than an hour. All members are welcome. My new policy is all club business is handled at this meeting and not at the general meeting.

Keep in touch with all the happening at your club on our web page gigharborpsa.org and signup for our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Gig-Harbor-Puget-Sound-Anglers. You will find out the latest information on what’s happening here.

Mike will be putting on another of his fantastic raffles with some nice items in May.

Once again the meeting starts at 7PM on 10 May but I encourage members to come early and shop at Bass Pro with your club discount or join us at 6PM in the Uncle Bucks restaurant for dinner and share fishing reports.

See you all there.
