November Presidents Message

November Presidents Message for Gig Harbor – Tacoma PSA

President: Art Tachell

At our Oct. 11th chapter meeting Josh Hughes and Nate Alvord representatives for Scotty Downriggers gave a presentation on the difference in Scotty Downrigger models, their features, how to care for and operate. They also discussed some of the components that may need replacing depending on how much use the downrigger gets used and advised keeping some basic repair components on hand just in case one goes bad which could ruin a fishing trip. There are also many professional repair centers throughout Puget Sound and the Straits, our local repair center is SPORTCO in Fife WA.

Scotty Downriggers are a major supporter of sportfishing in Washington and beyond, thank you Scotty.

Our speaker for our November 8th chapter meeting will be Bill Batson of Batson Enterprises the makers of Quality fishing rods and components for building fishing rods, this would be a great opportunity to learn all about how fishing rods and their components are made.

Batson Enterprises are also great supporters of the Sport fishing community, thank you Bill.

The chapter member monthly drawing sponsored by John Hagar of Southworth Marine was for $260.00 and was not claimed because the member drawn was not present so next month it will be $370.00.

The chapter meeting was well attended with several new members that signed up and several visitors that came to check out our chapter.

President’s Message October 2023

Presidents message from Gig Harbor PSA for October 2023

President:  Art Tachell

Our guest speaker for our September 13th general club meeting was Duane Inglin of Fish Hunt Northwest and he gave a fantastic presentation in detail on fishing for Coho in Grays Harbor.

This fishery opens September 15th and provides a great shallow water opportunity to catch some quality Coho.

Our speaker for our October 11th general meeting will be a representative from Scotty Downriggers and Products. He or she will discuss maintenance, repairs, new products and how to get the best performance from their products.

The club member that was drawn during our membership cash drawing was not present so next month’s drawing will be $260.00. We would like to once again thank John Hagar of Southworth and Lighthouse Marine for sponsoring the drawing.

Our club activity for September was a club Coho derby which was one by Pete Pittman with a 7.87lb. Coho congratulations Pete. It was a gorgeous day on the water, and I do believe all entrants had their limits of Coho.

Our next project partnering with the Auburn chapter will be nutrient enhancement in the upper watershed of the Puyallup River by placing spawned carcasses of chinook and coho salmon from Voights Creek Hatchery into the feeder streams. This is a great opportunity to see wildlife like deer, elk, bear and great views. This project will be every Wednesday for the next six weeks if you would like to get involved call Art Tachell 253-691-0811 for more info.

The club delivered 440 lbs. of surplus fish food to the Puyallup Historical Hatchery.

Founding member Mark Connot”s estate donated fishing gear to be sold at our annual swap meet to benefit the club.

Member Dave Morgan passed recently and will be greatly missed.

Our general club meeting is the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00PM and is located at Tower Lanes 6323 6th Ave. Tacoma, Wash.

All are welcome to attend our club meetings so if you are interested, please come out.

Presidents Message September 2023

September Presidents Message for Gig Harbor PSA

President: Art Tachell

Our club meeting on August 9th was mostly centered around our 27th annual salmon derby which was held on August 12th despite the early closure of MA11 which is our usual marine area to fish, which created a lively discussion as you would imagine we were able to fish MA13. Club president Art Tachell gave a brief discussion on areas to fish, gear, etc. for marine area 13.

Although the salmon fishing was a little slow and there were some pretty good tidal swings, we did have 43 salmon entered in the derby. The weather was great and 200+participants had a great time on the water. Every participant went home with a prize thanks to 40 donors that were very generous.

A special thank you to the Buchannan family of SMI/BEAUMAC, King Salmon Marine, Cressy door, SPORTCO and so many others.

The PSA Gig Harber club members did a great job putting the whole thing together. Many thanks to former president Frank Baker we could have not pulled this off without you. Thank you.

President’s Message August 2023

August Presidents message for the Gig Harbor chapter of PSA

President Art Tachell

Our guest speaker was Blake Smith, a seasoned fisheries biologist with the Puyallup Tribe. Blake gave us an overview of all the fisheries facilities and programs in the Puyallup River watershed. Blake showed us where their facilities were located and explained what their functions were. There are conventional hatchery facilities, naturalized freshwater acclimation ponds and fresh and saltwater net pens.

Blake also covered the many barriers that salmon and steelhead had to overcome since 1906 like dams, gravel mining, effects of logging, culverts, development, etc. Blake mentioned the many habitat restoration projects that have been done that are going on now and some future projects in the works. The species Blake covered were Steelhead, Chum salmon, pink salmon, Coho salmon and Chinook salmon. Blake’s presentation was very informative and enjoyed by all. Thank you, Blake.

Our membership cash award drawing sponsored by John Hagar of Southworth Marine of Port Orchard was not claimed by member #315 so the cash award for our drawing next month will be $260.00. Thank you, John.

Our club received our permit from WDFW for up to 4000 salmon carcasses to use for nutrient enhancement in the watershed of the Puyallup River. Volunteers would be appreciated, just contact Art Tachell or Frank Baker.

Our annual all public salmon derby will keep us busy from now through August; the date is August 12, 2023.

We will be having a club only Coho salmon derby on September 9, 2023.

I would like to thank all of our volunteer members for their passion and dedication to protecting our habitat, environment and our fisheries.
